When Steph and Reece first got in touch, the words “surprise wedding” definitely stood out! Though naturally the bridal party was in on the whole thing, the event was a very big surprise indeed for their guests. Everyone thought they were attending an engagement party… until sunset hit Mentone Beach!

Secret Wedding Vibes in St Kilda
The day kicked off at the Novotel in St Kilda, with Steph and Reece staying in separate rooms to keep with tradition, while still enjoying the closeness of being in the same building. The atmosphere was calm, happy, and full of quiet excitement. Only a handful of close friends and family knew the day’s true purpose, which made every moment that much more special.
First Look, Then Flip the Script
To keep the surprise intact, the timeline for this wedding ran completely backwards. The couple had their first look at the St Kilda Clocktower, followed by a relaxed portrait session near Luna Park. A pair of iconic Volkswagens joined the adventure, the perfect touch of retro for this stylish, sunlit session. We also ventured to the iconic Beach Boxes for some colour-popping portraits with the whole bridal party crew. So much fun – and lots of laughs! So rather than following the ceremony with portraits, everything was flipped: first photos, then what looked like a casual party kick-off, and finally the ceremony. Guests arrived none the wiser.
The Big Reveal at Mentone Surf Lifesaving Club
Celebrant Kelly Rossi, a favourite around these parts, made the big announcement to an initially puzzled crowd. Jubilation erupted, making for lots of surprised faces full of joy and disbelief! She then seamlessly herded everyone to join the couple down on the beach. With a gentle breeze rolling off the bay and a golden sunset to frame it all, Steph and Reece made it official.The weather was perfect, and Kelly’s ceremony was equally perfect. The gorgeous golden sunset made the photography on Mentone beach look breathaking. The warm weather was just the icing on the cake.
Surprise Wedding Photography
After the ceremony, it was impossible to resist a bonus beach wedding photography session with the glowing bride and grinning groom, which produced incredible results as the sun went down over the bay. The timing couldn’t have been better. The light, the warmth, the joy… it all came together for a short but stunning Mentone Beach wedding photography session. From there, it was back inside to the Mentone Surf Lifesaving Club for the cake cutting and a night of celebrations with their closest people.This Mentone beach wedding photography session was just idyllic.
