It was such a joy to photograph Sophie and John’s wedding… true lovebirds, through and through! I’d had the pleasure of photographing their beautiful family before, so being invited to capture this next chapter was extra special. From the very start of the day, it was clear how much care and thought they’d poured into everything. Their Richmond wedding was full of heart, tradition, and unforgettable moments – and I was there to capture every beat.
Arriving In Style
Sophie got ready in Clarinda with the assistance of her radiant bridesmaids and loving family, helped by the fabulous stylist Hary May, who I have also had the great pleasure of working alongside on numerous occasions! Meanwhile, John and the boys prepared over in Altona. As I often do for full-day weddings, I can split coverage between locations to make sure we never miss a moment from either side. Their transport? A pair of lovingly restored VW Kombi wagons – so nostalgic, so them, and so photogenic. The journey to the church was full of anticipation and smiles.
A Traditional Ceremony Full of Heart
Their traditional ceremony was deeply touching – steeped in family history and full of heartfelt vows. But there were still plenty of giggles, too. One especially moving moment? Sophie’s grandfather had been hospitalised the week prior and couldn’t attend in person – but thanks to a live video link, he witnessed the whole thing. Thank goodness for technology.
A Hospital Visit… a Love-Filled Detour
After the ceremony and a few sweet portraits outside the church, Sophie and John took a detour most couples don’t plan for — a visit to Grandad in the ICU. What followed was unforgettable: Grandad sang traditional songs to the couple from his hospital bed while doctors and nurses gathered around. It was one of those rare, magic moments that makes wedding photography so meaningful. Honestly, I teared up behind the lens! After that, we swung by Degraves Street for coffee and some city portraits — the perfect pit stop, since it was the site of their very first date.
The Fabulous Reception at Fenix Weddings
Then it was off to Fenix Events in Richmond: a gorgeous spot for a reception that was buzzing with love, laughter, and energy. John’s speech? One of the best I’ve heard! Witty, heartfelt, and completely unforgettable. After the formalities came the first dance… and then the dance floor absolutely erupted. Traditional Greek dancing filled the room, plates were definitely not smashed (but energy was high!), and guests danced, hugged, and toasted well into the night. It was one of those weddings where every kind of emotion was on display… quiet tenderness, wild joy, and everything in between. One of the most special things about this wedding was that I’d met and photographed the lovely Sophie when she was a bridesmaid at her sister Lina’s wedding – another unforgettable day I had the joy of capturing!
